On World Condom Day, gynecologist Valeria Valko stated that 98% of transmissions occur through unprotected sexual intercourse. She noted that an estimated 17% of people living with HIV are still unaware of their status. The rise in sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is largely associated with decreased and inconsistent condom use, especially among young people. This is compounded by a post-pandemic effect: a resumption of diagnoses after a decline in notifications in 2020, new relationship habits such as higher partner turnover, and the circulation of myths that minimize risk. 'Using a condom from start to finish of all sexual practices, checking its expiration date, using a new one for each relationship, and pairing it with water-based or silicone lubricants are fundamental measures,' the specialist pointed out. She also added: 'It is also important to have regular STI testing.' Valko commented that 'only 17% of young people always use a condom in all their sexual relationships,' according to a survey conducted by the Aids Healthcare Foundation (AHF) in Argentina. Specialists recommend using a condom from start to finish of every sexual practice because it protects against STIs and prevents unplanned pregnancies, while noting that it can be combined with another contraceptive method for added protection: IUD, implant, pills, or injectable. The date takes on special relevance given the increase in STIs in Argentina, with a greater impact on the young population, according to a report accessed by the Argentine News Agency. In it, the gynecologist explained: 'According to the National Epidemiological Bulletin, in 2025 there was a 20.5% increase in syphilis compared to the same period in 2024.' In case of unprotected sex, breakages, or slippages, there are strategies such as post-exposure prophylaxis for HIV and other STIs, as well as emergency contraception, available in emergency rooms.' The expert finally assured that prevention is possible, while being informed, taking care of oneself, and consulting in a timely manner remains the best strategy to protect sexual health.
